The
Lahu in Thailand consist of 3 main subgroups
: Lahu Yi, Lahu Na and Lahu Shele. The majority
of them reside in such provinces as Ching
Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Kamphaeng
Phet and Lampang, Only a small number live
in Phetchabun and Phayao.
Costume
Each subgroup of the Lahu dresses differently.
Common to all groups is the way they colorfully
decorate their clothes with stripes. Of all
the three
subgroups,
Lahu Yi is the largest. A Lahu Yi woman wears
a long-sleeved, waist-length blouse. A red
stripe is decorated at the facing, the hem
and the upper sleeves.
The
blouse with round or square buttons is worn
with a long black skirt decorated with colorful
lines. A Lahu man wears a black, long-sleeved
shirt with or without embroidered facing,
a loose-fitting trouser and leg pads.
On special event,
men and women put on clothes decorated with
silver buttons or silver coins. As for ornaments,
silver neckbands and bangles are oftenly worn.
