Frequently Asked Questions :
Siem Reap the 7th Wonder of The World

The period between the 9th and the 13th centuries was the golden age of the Khmer Empire, and a succession of kings made use of their vast wealth and the labor of slaves to execute a monumental building program. During this time, Khmer architecture developed and evolved to reflect the change from the worship of the Hindu god Shiva, to Vishnu, and then to a form of Mahayana Buddhism. A huge and sophisticated system of irrigation canals increased and solidified the strength of the Empire. In 1431 Thai armies from the west captured Angkor, and the Khmer court abandoned the city. Theravada Buddhist monks took over the city and for many years, it was an important pilgrimage point.

One of the world's great architectural achievements, Angkor has tantalized Western travelers since 1858 when Henri Mouhot, a French naturalist, stumbled upon it in the jungle, and it became the 'lost city' of Asia. In recent years, it was 'lost' again, but now the city in all its glory can be seen.

Q
How do I get there?
The best flights are from Bangkok, it takes 1 hour 10 minutes to Phnom Penh or only 1 hour to Siem Reap ( Angkor Wat)

Q
When is the best time to visit?
November to April, which is the dry season. May to October is the rainy season and it is very hot.

Q
Is it safe to travel in Cambodia these days?
A
Yes, if you stay in Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat, it is no more dangerous than in any other country in the region. Just don't wander of into the fields or the jungle because of the landmines.

Q
Do I need a visa?
A
You can get a visa on arrival in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. The cost is $30 US and you need one (1) passport photo.

Q
What about the food?
A
In the main tourist centers and hotels you will find good food that is safe to eat. Khmer food is very tasty, with fish, pork and chicken being the favourite choices. Most dishes are seasoned with chilli, garlic and mint.

As well the French have left their cooking style in Cambodia, so you will find lots of small French restaurants which serve very good continental cuisine.

Q
Should I go to Phnom Penh as well?
A
Yes, if you have time, we highly recommend a stop in Phnom Penh. You can visit the National Museum, which has lots of treasures from Angkor Wat which are fascinating to see before you go to Angkor Wat. Also there is the Royal Palace and the famous Silver Pagoda. It is also fascinating just to watch the daily life in this bustling city. Phnom Penh is situated on the Tonle Sap river, and most important buildings are situated close to the river banks.
